An Interview with Chester’s Rising Interior Design Talent Interview by Sophie Grant.

There’s a certain effortless charm to a room designed by Natalie Simone. Based in the historic city of Chester, Natalie brings together classic British elegance with a modern sensibility, creating spaces that feel both timeless and deeply personal.

I sat down with Natalie to talk about inspiration, intuition and the beauty of truly knowing your client.

Sophie Grant: Natalie, welcome and congratulations on the launch of Morris and Milne Interiors. Could you start by telling us a little about your design philosophy?

Natalie: Thank you so much! For me, great design always begins with the person who will live in the space. I spend time really getting to know my clients, how they live, what they love, their rhythms, their quirks. Only once I truly understand them do I begin to shape the aesthetic. The look of a space is important, of course, but it should always feel like a natural extension of the people who inhabit it.

Sophie: How would you describe your style?

Natalie: I’d say my work is rooted in classic British interiors, but I love to layer in a modern edge, something unexpected that gives a room freshness and individuality. Whether it’s a contemporary fabric against a traditional backdrop, or clean-lined furniture in a Georgian setting, I enjoy that tension between old and new.

Sophie: Tell us about your journey into interior design, it wasn’t a completely straight path, was it?

Natalie: No, not at all! Before interior design, I worked as a hair and makeup artist in TV and film. It was a creative, fast-paced world and I loved the artistry of transformation. That experience actually honed my eye for detail and my instinct for storytelling through design, skills that I feel translate so well in interiors. Eventually, I followed my passion and earned my BA in Interiors at the Manchester School of Art and the rest naturally unfolded from there.

Sophie: You’ve previously worked on homes both in the UK and abroad. Has that international experience influenced your design work?

Natalie: Absolutely. Working internationally opened my eyes to different ways people use and appreciate their spaces. It gave me a broader visual language, a sensitivity to cultural nuances in design and a great appreciation of the important role ‘place’ has in anchoring a home.

Sophie: What sets Morris and Milne Interiors apart?

Natalie: I think it’s my intuitive approach. Clients often tell me they feel truly “seen” and understood. I don’t impose a signature style on every home, I collaborate. My goal is to create interiors that are beautiful, functional, and deeply personal.

Sophie: And finally, what excites you most about this new chapter?

Natalie: Honestly, it’s the people. Every client brings a new story and I feel incredibly privileged to help them shape their spaces in a way that reflects who they are. Interiors, to me, are about connection - between people, their homes and their sense of belonging.
